Salters Tavern

It was the year of 1895 at Salters Tavern where many of the low class
citizens of Tampa gathered for drinks.  Members of the predominantly white police force were often at Salters Tavern, harassing the patrons.

One night, Officer John McCormick arrived to break up a disturbance and was shot and killed.  Singleton, a negro and a regular at the bar, was charged with the murder.  He was then hunted down and arrested a few days later.

This was not an uncommon occurance at Salters Tavern.  In 1900, an almost identical situation took place between Officer Crumpton and a black man named Stevenson.  Overall, the people of Salter's Tavern were treated like second class citizens.  They were not respected by the white citizens of Tampa and were often treated unjustly by the Tampa police force.
