MURAL
"Layers in Time" Lake Placid, FL is known as the "City of Murals." There are many scenes painted on buildings in the town, showing the history, ecology, industry and events of Highlands County. The members of the Kissimmee Valley Archaeological and Historical Conservancy had long wished to have a mural depicting the early humans who lived in this area. We went to the Mural Society seeking help. The society was enthusiastic and found a good sponsor, Gates Oil Company.
Dean Quigley, a Florida artist, well known for his paintings of prehistoric times, was commissioned to paint the mural. The size of the mural is eighty feet long and twenty feet high, and is presented in three time periods.
The first section represents the "archaic period" when men hunted animals like the giant mammoth with a throwing stick called an atlatl. The second section shows a hunter with bow and arrow, hunting a deer in the "woodland period." The third section represents the present time with archaeologists excavating to find out how the early people lived, while the spirit of an ancient one looks down on them.
