midshipmen career |
| |
The USF Naval ROTC is designed to train talented
students for an exciting career as a commissioned
officer in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps while they
pursue a bachelors degree in their field of study.
Freshman Orientation
Orientation is a 3 day-long indoctrination for
prospective Midshipmen, that may be conducted at local military and campus
facilities.
At orientation, they are taught personal grooming
standards and uniform appearance, leadership qualities,
unit cohesion, physical readiness, basic military
knowledge, and close order drill. In addition,
Midshipmen are exposed to the unrestricted line
community where they can explore the possible careers
available to them upon entering the fleet: aviation,
surface, submarine, and the Marine Corps. The
swearing-in ceremony marks the culmination of this
week-long occasion and welcomes the incoming Midshipmen
into the Naval service.

Midshipman 4th Class-Freshman Year
The first year in the program allows freshmen to
familiarize themselves in all aspects of college life in
terms of academics, student services, clubs and
extracurricular activities, and time management. These
aspects will become essential for a college student
working towards earning a degree.
Within the unit, 4th Class Midshipmen will expand their
military knowledge by learning the fundamentals of the
Department of the Navy and the rise of American naval
sea power. They will also learn to lead by example by
applying leadership responsibilities, enhance their
skills in unarmed drill, and partake in a myriad of
activities and community services while participating in
the battalion.

CORTRAMID (Scholarship 3rd Class Cruise)
Career Orientation and Training of Midshipmen,
CORTRAMID, is a popular cruise for 3rd Class Midshipmen.
They will spend week-long indoctrinations with each
unrestricted line community; amphibious training with
the Marines, ground school and flight time in the
aviation field, aboard the finest ships in the surface
fleet, and touring the undersea world in submarines.
This cruise is designed to allow Midshipmen to
experience hands-on training, meet Midshipmen from other
universities, and make educated decisions on their
service selection.

Midshipman 3rd Class-Sophomore Year
Sophomore scholarship students who commit themselves to
the program will incur a military obligation at this
point. Numerous opportunities for leadership are
available for personal and professional development.
College Program Midshipmen demonstrating an above
average aptitude within the battalion may be considered
for scholarships and their first experience on a summer
cruise.
3rd Class Midshipmen may be granted special
responsibilities by holding billets within the
battalion, which serve as a learning experience for what
they may encounter when serving in the active duty
fleet. To expand their knowledge in the naval sciences,
3rd Class Midshipmen will learn basic leadership and
management skills. In addition, Navy-Option Midshipmen
will be introduced to naval engineering, whereas the
Marine-Option Midshipmen will be exposed to the
evolution of warfare.
College program students who are unable to attain a
scholarship may apply for Advanced Standing by the end
of their sophomore year if they continue to desire a
career in the Navy/Marine Corps and to remain in the
program.

The Enlisted Experience (Scholarship 2nd Class Cruise)
For one month, 2nd Class Midshipmen will experience
daily life in the fleet by working with a running mate-
an experienced, enlisted Sailor on a ship or a
submarine. The majority of the naval vessels that the
Midshipmen board are underway and can make port visits
anywhere around the world.
Marine-Option Midshipmen will undergo amphibious
training at the Combined Arms Exercise at Twentynine
Palms, CA or attend Mountain Warfare Training School in
Bridgeport, CA instead of the conventional
ship/submarine cruise.
Female Navy-Option Midshipmen are restricted to the
surface cruise because of berthing issues on the
submarines.

Midshipman 2nd Class-Junior Year
Juniors, having gained some knowledge of the military
workforce through the NROTC program, should begin to
consider their choice of occupation for service
selection.
2nd Class Navy-Option Midshipmen will learn the
principles of navigation, seamanship, and ship
operations. These courses are important concepts that
every unrestricted line officer should understand since
they will apply this knowledge when they are leaders
underway in the fleet.
Intensive leadership positions will provide stimulating
challenges for Midshipmen as their accountability,
diligence, and management skills are tested.

The Junior Officer Experience (1st Class Cruise)
All Midshipmen transitioning into their senior year will
be required to attend the 1st Class Cruise. This cruise
will allow them to experience daily life as a junior
officer in the fleet. Here, all career opportunities in
the unrestricted line community will become available:
aviation, surface, submarine, even special warfare
(mini-BUD/S), Bulldog (Marine Corps OCS), and the
foreign exchange program. The 1st Class cruise is the
final opportunity for Navy-option Midshipmen to make an
educated decision on their service selection.
Navy-Option Midshipmen will be assigned a junior officer
as a running mate and treated as a junior officer among
the crew on either a surface ship, submarine, or in an
aircraft squadron. Most surface and submarine vessels
will be underway and make worldwide port visits.
Marine-Option Midshipmen will attend Bulldog at
Officer Candidate School in Quantico, Virginia for a
six-week mentally and physically rigorous test of their
mettle. They will be tested on leadership, physical
fitness, tactics, and academics. Bulldog is a
culmination of three years of training for Marine
Options, and is a highly demanding and rewarding
experience.

Midshipman 1st Class-Senior Year

must have already decided on their career path while
preparing to accomplish their remaining educational
goals for graduation. To sum up their education in the
naval sciences, they are taught leadership and ethics.
In addition, Navy Options learn weapons and naval
warfare, whereas the Marine Options learn about the
history of amphibious warfare.
At this point, 1st Class Midshipmen demonstrating an
overall knowledge of the program and outstanding
potential, will hold the top billets within the

Commissioning
Commissioning is a new beginning for college graduates
as they transition into their career of choice in the
naval service. This prestigious event is also a time to
reflect back on their contributions to the program as
Midshipmen. With these memories in mind, these junior
officers can look to their future with pride. Whatever
path they may take, the experiences and goals are the
same; hands-on training to earn the qualifications that
all junior officers pursue, and the exciting real-life
action of the fleet Navy and Marine Corps.
