* NROTC Midshipmen must complete various Naval Science
courses
* These are in addition to those required by individual
degree programs
* Designed to provide a fundamental understanding of the
roles & missions of the Navy/Marine Corps team
* A wide variety of subjects from navigation to
leadership and ethics
* All courses are fully accredited university courses
and may be considered as electives by university
academic departments according to their own academic
program policies
* The unit Commanding Officer is the Professor of Naval
Science and is responsible for the Naval Science
curriculum

Naval Science Course Description
NSC 1110 Introduction to Naval Science (3)
* Provides an overview of the Naval Service with
emphasis on the mission, organization, regulations and
components of the Navy and Marine Corps.
NSC 1140 Sea Power and Maritime Affairs (3)
* This course deals with the importance of sea power in
historical events, including emphasis on worldwide
political-military confrontations following the cold
war.
NSC 2231 Principles of Naval Management I (3)
* Theory and principles of management, focusing on the
officer-manager as an organizational decision maker
o Includes interpersonal skills, behavior factors, group
dynamics
NSC 2221C Navigation/Naval Operations I: Navigation (3)
* Theory, principles and procedures of piloting and
celestial navigation
* Tides, currents and weather
* Use of navigation instruments and equipment
* Practicum and laboratory required
NSC 2121 Naval Ships Systems I (3)
* Types, structures and purpose of naval ships
* Principles of hydrodynamic forces and stability
* Shipboard compartmentalization and ship electrical and
auxiliary systems
* Related theory, design and operation of steam, gas
turbine, and nuclear propulsion
* Shipboard safety and firefighting
NSC 3122 Naval Ships Systems II (3)
* PR: NSC 2121.
* Overview of the various types, capabilities, and
limitations of fire control systems and weapons
* Discusses physical aspects of radar and underwater
sound for target acquisition, threat analysis, tracking,
weapons selection, delivery, and guidance
* Principles of explosives, fusing, and naval ordnance
NSC 3214C Navigation/Naval Operations II: Seamanship and
Ship Operations (3)
* PR: NSC 2221C
* International and inland rules of the road
* Relative motion-vector analysis
* Ship handling
* Employment of naval tactics
* Afloat communications
NSC 4232 Principles of Naval Management II (Leadership
and Ethics) (3)
* PR: NSC 2231
* Integration of professional competencies and qualities
of effective leadership with emphasis on moral and
ethical responsibilities,and accountability
* Military law for the junior officer
NSC 2221 Evolution of Warfare (3)
* A survey of military history emphasizing principles of
warfare, strategy and tactics
* Discusses significant military leaders and
organizations
NSC 4224 Amphibious Warfare (3)
* History of amphibious warfare emphasizing doctrine and
techniques
* Overview of the interrelations of political,
strategic, operational, tactical, and technical levels
of war from the past
* In addition to the above courses, students are
required to take a variety of courses before graduation
as designated by the Professor of Naval Science.
