About the Internship [printable brochure]
This highly competitive volunteer internship provides talented USF students (U.S. and international) with a valuable experience volunteering overseas at U.S. Department of State affiliated EducationUSA advising centers, NGO’s, and USAID organizations.  The program gives students the opportunity to gain global experience in an international education setting overseas while building up their resume. Students will be expected to share their positive experiences as USF students and promote cross-cultural understanding as Global Ambassadors outside the U.S. A certificate of completion may be awarded to participants upon successful completion of their internship, and USF students will be asked to submit a PowerPoint presentation and article for the 2007 USF IAC Newsletters. [Return to top]

USF Global Ambassadors must select one of the host centers, see current locations list.

Duties and Responsibilities
The work will involve volunteering at least 20 hours per week for a minimum of six weeks at one of the selected U.S. Department of State affiliated overseas educational advising centers (Fulbright, AMIDEAST, bi-national English language teaching centers, and similar), and with USAID missions and related organizations, who have indicated an interest in incorporating USF Global Ambassadors as summer interns in their offices. [Return to top]

Responsibilities may include one or a combination of the following, depending on individual Global Ambassadors’ talents and strengths: help provide information on study in the U.S. to interested international students/scholars; participate in pre-departure presentations as resource panelists and share their experiences as USF students; become mentors to students interested in studying their field of study; help centers create or enhance various reference materials/IT capabilities/resources; help centers improve their databases, facilitate writing workshops, teach English, conduct research on global topics, and perform regular office administrative duties.

Eligibility and Requirements
This internship is open to talented U.S. and international students (currently in their sophomore year or above) and graduate students in all majors who will be returning to USF for fall semester 2007. Selection will be based on completion of an application form, an essay, two letters of recommendation, an interview, a resume, and a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Foreign language skills, previous community service, leadership roles, and extra-curricular activities are preferred but not mandatory.  An interest in public diplomacy, international education and/or global issues, is strongly recommended.  Excellent oral presentation, writing, and cross cultural communication skills are required, as well as the ability to speak positively about the student’s experience at USF.  Interns must be able to adapt to and benefit from a new cultural experience with maturity and responsibility.  A commitment must be given to the center for at least six weeks in the summer for a minimum of 20 hours per week. [Return to top]

Costs and Expenses
In most cases this will not be a paid internship, but reimbursement for daily public transportation and lunches could be covered, depending on each overseas center’s budget.  Global Ambassador Interns will be responsible for the costs of their housing, food, travel, and personal expenses.   [Return to top]

Course Credits
Students interested in receiving academic credit for this internship should consult with their academic adviser to determine whether their department offers credit for this type of experience. Students should also make an appointment to speak with an adviser in the USF study abroad office.  [Return to top]
