In Memoriam: Ward Stavig 1948-2006

On May 1st, 2006 ISLAC suffered a sad and irreparable loss: the passing of our dear colleague Ward Stavig. More than someone with whom one just meets and builds a rapport, Ward was someone very special. He was a true scholar and humanist who produced outstanding and highly recognized research on Colonial and contemporary Peru and the Andean Highlands. If we think superb scholarship on Tupac Amaru and the 18th Century revolts in Alto Peru, Ward’s name comes to our minds. At an organizational level, he was a true institution and a life force in ISLAC; a source of reflective moderation as the coordinator of our graduate program and a rock-solid individual we could count on. Always available to our students, always wise and positive, and a teacher in the true sense of the word, he was both reflective and passionate about things he believed in. And above all, his passion was life itself. Hunter, rebel, superb gourmet cook and engaging host, he brought honor and wisdom to our University and happiness to those who had the privilege of having been his friends.
