Textbook,
Course Materials
- Do we need to purchase the textbook? Yes,
it's strongly recommended that you purchase the text. I
can't go over everything in the lecture period or online, so
there are required chapter readings each week. Also the
chapter quizzes are from the chapter readings.
- Where can we purchase the textbook? Please see
the past announcements and syllabus for information on the
textbook.
- What is the Course ID for the class? You don't
need a course id to use the eText, just go to our Modules area,
Course Information module and click on the 'eText / eBook'
page. You'll be able to register using your product code
or purchase a product code.
- The opening case studies and some content seems to be a
little different than the chapter notes. What's up
with that? I let people use the current version of the text or
one version prior to help defray costs (lower cost to start or
better buy back value). Sometimes the content varies
between editions, but the basics are the same. There is a
copy of the 7th edition at the library on reserve. You can
check this out for 3 hours if you need to get the most recent
edition information.
Exams & Quizzes
- I have to miss an exam, can I schedule a make-up?
Please check the syllabus for more info, but everyone can miss
any one exam for any reason. Exam 4 is offered for this
reason to replace a single missing exam or low exam score.
If you need to miss more than one exam you should consider
dropping the course or contact me with documentation, etc. and
we can discuss this.
- When are the chapter quizzes due? Can we take them
more than once? Can we drop any quizzes? Can we
take them late?
- The chapter quizzes are due on the Tuesday before each
exam.
- You can take them multiple times, only the last
attempt will count.
- You can drop 2 quizzes.
- You cannot take them after the due date.
- What if I start another attempt and decide I don't want to
take it again and don't finish it? Will this count as my
'last' attempt? Yes, this will be your 'last'
attempt and you will get whatever score you get on that last
attempt. If this happens and you get low score, just take
it again so your last attempt is good! Remember, you can
also drop your two lowest quiz scores.
Grades
- When I look at my grades, 2 of the quizzes are dark or
grayed out and are hard to read - what's up with this?
pro
These are your two 'dropped' quizzes. Canvas identifies
the two lowest quiz grades by graying them out. This will
change as you take more quizzes and the lowest scores change.
- How can I figure out my average or where I stand in the
class? Please see the syllabus for this information,
don't rely on the average posted in Canvas.
Projects
- Can someone check my project and see if it's ok before I
submit it? Sorry- we don't do that :( We offer
the instructions, tips and the project overview so you can see
what's required and then check your results against the project
overview (which basically the key). It is difficult to
pre-grade projects for two reasons, 1) we are doing double the
grading (~600 students times ~8 projects = 4800 projects...
times 2 if we pre-grade them!) and 2) if a TA or I review a
project and miss something and your grader finds it, it leads to
frustration and many emails. That's one of the reasons why
I post the project overview and very detailed instructions.
- I don't have Excel or Access on my computer - what can I
do?
- Use the computers at the library
- Buy a copy of Microsoft Office Suite at the Marshall
Center's Computer Store for less than $20. Note: Apple
users - your version will not include Access :(
- Use the site for Excel or Access: http://apps.usf.edu.
Just be sure to save your work correctly.
- Windows users can download Access from the MSDNAA /
DreamSpark program. Info about this is in the Modules
area of Canvas.
Help!
- How can I get help on projects? You can get help
5 different ways:
- Look at the Project Overview on the assignment page (below
the project instructions), use the Project Tips (link also
below the project instructions or at bwarner.org/tips ) or
use Google (a wealth of information - of course!)
- TA and instructor office hours. These days/times are
listed in the syllabus and in the 'Contact Hours' of Canvas
(see Modules)
- Online hours. We are using 'Collaborate' to hold
online office hours. If you look at the 'Contact Hours'
of Canvas there are links for our 'Collaborate'
sessions. There are also 'Collaborate' instructions in
this area
- Email me via Canvas or directly at bwarner@usf.edu (Do not
email the TAs, they do not respond to email questions)
- I can't get 'Collaborate' to run - what can I do?
1) Contact the online help desk at it.usf.edu and see if they
can walk you through it. 2) Stop by the library, first
floor, bring your laptop and ask the IT gurus there to take a
look 3) bring your laptop to our office hours and we'll try to
help.
